All the more reason to change paintings on your walls now and then. We become desensitized to the familiar and need new stimulation. Winter's Light

Join me along with 20 other California artists to celebrate the glory of the winter season... at the Historic Blinn House Estate, 160 N. Oakland Ave., Pasadena, Calif. The show runs from Nov. 1 to January 31, 2012. The reception is November 10 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Here are three of my oil paitings. "Castle Craig Skier" is from the cross country ski trails at Mammoth Lakes. "Icy Blue Danube" is painted from my riverboat cabin window on the Danube in a snow storm, and the sunrise is actually all frosted over.

"Young Mountain Lion" 16 x 20 original oil

You probably won't see this young mountain lion from my balcony, but down below at the creek there is wildlife. I was biking along Sycamore Trail when this one courageously stared at me. Was the mama near? I turned around until two more bikers came along before proceeding. I like to paint this trail, and its rare visitor made it even more exciting. About 10 of these mountains lions live in the Santa Monicas.

"Creek at Porter Ranch" 14 x 11 original oil

I recall swimming in the creek at my grandfather's farm. What fun these two are having right here in Limekiln Canyon in this Los Angeles suburb. I had wanted to paint the naked infant whom I found splashing there also. By the time I set up my easel, the infant had its clothes on...and besides..nudity?

If you ride your bike up Highway 1 on the Pacific Coast out of Mugu State Park and climb behind the cliffside rocks, you will find this bridge. But you need to get there soon. The pounding waves may wash it down one of these days. SOLD

These aspen are the real gold of the Sierras. The tissue and oil from my palette knife create ripples of light.

In Mammoth Lakes I rode my bike up to this view point. Sunset makes Bloody Mountain deserving of its name. And the rich color from the aspen are glowing with my palette knife.

The Women’s City Club of Pasadena at the historic Blinn House is pleased to announce its fall art exhibition, “A Touch of Gold.” The exhibition, which runs from August 1 through October 31, 2011, features fifty six paintings by eighteen California-based artists. It will be the second exhibition produced by Margaret Danielak, the Women’s City Club of Pasadena’s Curator of Exhibitions. The artists’ reception is Thursday, August 11 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Sailing on our clipper ship, Star Flyer in France and Italy, I found the views from our deck full of deep blue moments on the Mediterranean. My palette knife was happy to sculpt citadel walls, city allies, and poppies.

Or why not jump the waves at Malibu State Park. I like adventures in all kinds of places. That is why I tell people, "Change the paintings on your wall now and then for new experiences." My palette knife picks up the light at different times of the day in mystical ways. The Danube river was an icy sunrise frommy boat cabin window. The Cold Creek Crossing is on a warm spring day. The Malibu Sunrise from a south facing Pacific Beach is from high up on the cliffs.

Germany in the Winter, Arm Chair Adventures

Be an armchair traveler..come with me to Germany where I painted in ancient Medieval Cities like Rothenburg. I traveled from my riverboat on the Danube to walk the walls of this city, where you can catch the icy sun burning through the sky over the cathedral. In Regensburg, perhaps the best preserved Medieval city of Germany, I slogged in deep snow across this rock bridge over the Danube. Crusaders crossed on this same bridge after it was built in 1146 and called it "a wonder of the world." My palette knife catches the misty winter light of these romantic places.

Ocean Waves and Giant Sequoia's Majesty

There are no second helpings on an experience. God does not deal in duplicates. When I went back to New Brighton Beach to paint the tall trees again, I found new vistas, like this one. Palette Knife and Mixed Media Fun

When I discovered how much fun the palette knife was, it seemed that color and value just carved their way into my compositions. Flower petals took on a life of their own as they created their own form and shadow patterns when the light changed on the finished canvas. The palette knife can pick up multiple colors, just like the brush can from the palette. But the amount of paint is thicker and sculpts as you go. I use various sizes of knives, depending on the size of the canvas and what I am painting.

In this composition, the trees were the story I wanted to tell as the late afternoon sun sent sparkle into this thick wooded hillside. After the Mod Podge and tissue dried, I applied the palette knife to the surface to sculpt the trunks, shadows, and branches. This included many layers. In addition I used spray gold for a metalic light and even a little sparkle sprinkled in. Andy Warhol had a series of compositions in which he used diamond dust for luster.

The frame for this one is a gold metalic floater, because the painting sits right inside the frame edge, and enhances the gold in the composition.
